Vocabulary that trips people up

Identified vs. realised savings

Identified savings are predicted — every cost tool can produce them, and they are cheap. Realised savings are verified against subsequent actual spend after the fix landed.

The second is the number that appears on an invoice, and the one a CFO will accept. Varcio tracks them as separate states throughout, and a persistent gap between them indicates an execution bottleneck rather than a detection problem.

The protected tag

Any resource tagged finops:protected=true is unconditionally skipped by every automated action in the platform. No exceptions, no configuration required.
